Qualcomm has recently launched its latest mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC), the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit held in Hawaii. The SoC is designed to be a breakthrough in generative AI for smartphones and comes with several enhancements over its predecessor. These include a 30% performance boost in the Kryo CPU (up to 3.3 GHz) and a 20% increase in power efficiency. The AI Engine supports multi-modal generative AI models, large language models (LLM), language vision models (LVM), and transformer network-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) at over 10 billion parameters. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 emphasizes AI capabilities, enabling features such as up to 20 tokens per second for large language models.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 also brings improvements in image processing, gaming, photography, and video capture, supporting up to 8K HDR. Connectivity features include the Snapdragon X75 5G Modem-RF system with 10Gbps/3.5Gbps download and upload capacity, and Wi-Fi 7 at a peak speed of 5.8Gbps. Major brands like ASUS, Honor, OnePlus, and Xiaomi are expected to release Android handsets powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the coming weeks.
In addition to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm also announced the Snapdragon X Elite, a PC platform focused on enhancing AI applications, and Snapdragon Seamless, a cross-device system breaking down barriers between OEMs, devices, and operating systems.
